What is Calculus?
What is Calculus Made of?
Our mouths are filled with many things. Indeed, they’re filled with teeth and gums and our tongue and such, but they are also filled with bacteria that form into other substances, depending on certain factors. Plaque is one of the substances found in our mouths that form due to bacteria, and if we are not careful, it can turn into a problem that we cannot fix on our own.
Over time, plaque will turn into calculus, which is a substance that we cannot remove on our own. While some calculus is normal and even expected by many dentists of their patients, some people will end up with severe cases of it, which will necessitate a visit to their dentist to help them remove it. Calculus can cause a variety of issues for a patient, so it’s important that a patient seeks the help of a dentist as soon as they can to remove the substance in order to help restore their oral health to a good place.
How Do You Get Rid of Calculus?
To understand how to get rid of calculus, we must first understand how it forms. Calculus is a hardened plaque that forms when the plaque in your mouth precipitates, which kills the bacterial cells in the plaque and leaves behind the hardened material. This new surface on your teeth and gums makes further plaque and calculus build up possible and easier. If you do not floss or regularly brush your teeth, your chances of having the plaque in your mouth harden into calculus increases, and this will become a problem for those who do not see the dentist regularly.
Once plaque has hardened into calculus, only dental tools will be able to remove it. Your dentist may choose between a variety of tools, but using a scaler or an ultrasonic scaler will probably be the tool of choice. Removing calculus should be painless since your dentist is only removing a surface issue from your teeth and gums, which does not involve the nerves in your mouth. The most pain a patient may feel will come after the procedure when the gums are exposed once more after the calculus is gone. These gums will be tender and will need time to become less sensitive, but this should subside soon.
Following this procedure, regular flossing and brushing will help keep calculus away, which will make your mouth healthier and make your future cleanings by your dentist easier.

When Should I Replace my Toothbrush?
The Importance of Toothbrushes
When it comes to the health and care of our teeth, the toothbrush is very important. Without our toothbrushes, our teeth would not be cleansed of their daily exposure to our foods and drinks, which can lead to cavities, stains, and overall tooth decay. Due to this fact, cleaning our teeth daily is important, and so we need toothbrushes in our lives to ensure our teeth are as healthy as can be.
The life of a toothbrush is important, and due to that, they must be properly cared for and disposed of when necessary. Many people believe toothbrushes can be kept until the bristles no longer stand straight, or until the bristles change colors, or even that these brushes can be kept until the bristles are worn down to practically nothing. Unfortunately for these people, all of these beliefs are untrue and can actually be damaging to your teeth and mouth over time, with is the last thing we want when we are trying to care for our teeth. It’s important that toothbrushes are cared for properly, and that we discard of them properly when the time comes to insure our mouth is as healthy as possible, which is a serious matter.
When to Replace a Toothbrush
While there are many myths surrounding the proper time to discard a toothbrush, the actual time to do so is after three or four months of use. This number was not magically decided on by dentists, but, rather, was chosen as the longest amount of time in which a toothbrush is purposeful and healthy to use based on research. When a toothbrush is older than three to four months, the bristles are often frayed and worn to the point that they will not clean your teeth as effectively. Bacteria on the brush can also be an issue after this timeframe, which could cause issues with your gums as well.
Dentists also recommend that toothbrushes be replaced sooner if you have been ill or have stored your toothbrush near another person’s toothbrush who has been ill. When you use a toothbrush after getting better from being ill, you could end up getting sick again, which no one wants. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, so consider this next time you end up sick.
Replacing your toothbrush is important for the long-term health of your teeth, and so it’s important to take this task seriously and do it as recommended. For those who are forgetful about these sorts of issues, there is good news! There are many services available today that can deliver your new toothbrushes or toothbrush heads on a schedule designed to help you replace these items when necessary, which can help make this task easier for anyone and everyone who wishes to subscribe to it. This makes replacing your toothbrush easier than ever, so it’s something to consider for your life.

Is Charcoal Bad for Your Teeth?
What is Activated Charcoal?
In the health and beauty communities in media today, trends seem to come and go often. Every year, a new trend emerges as one from the year previous fades away, and it’s always exciting to see what the next trend will be. What’s more exciting is when one of these trends stands the test of time and becomes a very popular and useful product amongst consumers which can lead to better lives, depending on what the product is. One such product is charcoal, which has taken the world by storm in its beauty and health benefits, and today, it’s almost impossible to go into a store and not see at least one product without charcoal in it.
Activated charcoal, which is specially made with medical purposes in mind, can be used for many things involving health, one of which is your teeth. Many companies now make activated charcoal toothpaste or sell powdered activated charcoal to consumers to allow them to have whiter smiles, which is a sought-after feature for many people. While many companies, magazines, celebrities, and bloggers will talk about what’s great about charcoal for your smile, many do not discuss the possible risks and dangers this product contains. So, what are the risks of using charcoal for your teeth? It’s a good question to have, and one you might want to talk with your dentist about before you hop on the bandwagon of using it consistently.
Is Charcoal Good for Teeth?
Like many health crazes, the question of how effective something really is should always be asked. In regards to your teeth, charcoal seems to have benefits, but it also has its pitfalls. For many, activated charcoal is a simple and easy measure to help whiten their teeth slowly over time that is not as harmful as whitening strips or as expensive as whitening treatments by professionals. While this trick does not work with set-in stains, it can help to remove some surface stains, which is enough for many people to see a difference.
Unfortunately, charcoal is also damaging to teeth and should be used sparingly, if even at all. Charcoal is very abrasive, meaning that you can actually damage and wear down your enamel quickly if you use activated charcoal daily. This is also true for charcoal toothpaste, which has not been approved by the American Dental Association. While charcoal may seem like a cheap and easy solution for many in regards to teeth whitening, it may be better in the long run for your teeth to be whitened professionally. As always, talk with your dentist before you begin a tooth whitening regimen to ensure that you are caring for your teeth properly, that way they stay healthy for many years.

Can You Rebuild Your Enamel?
How do You Lose Enamel?
Enamel is an incredibly important part of your teeth. Your enamel is the outer layer of your teeth, which works to protect your teeth from the foods and drinks we eat. This layer of teeth is vital for tooth health since, without it, our teeth would not live long and would not be able to do what we need them to do. It’s important that we care for our enamel, that way our teeth are with us for years to come.
Enamel suffers when we eat foods high in sugar and acid or eat foods that stick to our teeth and damage our enamel over time. This, coupled with poor brushing and flossing habits, will lead to the enamel being stripped away, which will lead to tooth decay and disease. To help combat this issue, many people turn to products that claim they can help strengthen and restore enamel, but the question is: do these products actually work? While not all products will be able to provide the help they claim, other products will help you and allow your teeth to be healthier over time. It’s important to use these products, as they will actually help you in the long run, while also being sure to visit your dentist often, as they will be able to help you keep your enamel healthy while also advising you on how to keep it healthy between visits.
Can You Rebuild Enamel Once It’s Gone?
So, to answer the question of whether can you rebuild enamel: sadly, no. Once your enamel is gone, there’s no getting it back. Fortunately, it’s never too late to start on a good regime of oral health care to keep what enamel you do have healthy, and so it’s important to keep up with that routine once you’ve established it. To begin, be sure to floss regularly. Every day is the goal, but even flossing every other day is better than not flossing at all. Flossing removes the built-up plaque and bacteria between our teeth so that we can keep those spaces nice and healthy. This will keep our enamel looking good and help it be a lot stronger as well.
When it comes to our toothpaste, we want to ensure we use one that helps to strengthen the enamel we have while also fortifying it to be as healthy as it can. Be sure to read your toothpaste boxes and look for phrases like “enamel repair” or “strengthens enamel.” Not all kinds of toothpaste focus on strengthening our enamel, so you will need to be picky about the ones you do buy.
Finally, mouthwash is an excellent way to clean the whole mouth while also adding an extra layer of protection to our teeth. It’s important that we take that final step to help our teeth as much as possible, lest we skip it and find out our enamel has suffered later. Always talk with your dentist about your enamel needs and see how they can advise you to keep your teeth healthy and happy.

Why do Teeth Grow in Crooked?
The Obsession with Straight Teeth
The topic of straight teeth has been a focus for people for years now. While we may only know teeth straightening as made popular by Hollywood stars and advanced research showing the benefits of straight teeth, citizens in ancient civilizations thousands of years ago also sought to have straight teeth, which shows just how important our tooth health is. Straight teeth are important for many reasons, including easier cleaning and better overall health, so having straight teeth is not only an aesthetic choice but a health-focused one at that!
It is curious, though, as to why our teeth don’t grow in straight if it’s so important for our health? Our body tries its best to set us up with the healthiest configuration it can, so why do many of us suffer from crooked teeth? This question can range in answers, but usually, it’s due to a few simple culprits, which luckily, are easy to fix. Straight teeth may take time to get, but in the end, it’s worth the pain and trouble to have both a beautiful and healthy smile.
Teeth straightening options are varied in today’s market, so when you decide that you’re ready for straight teeth, call your dentist to see what they can do for you.
Why Teeth Grow Crooked
Crooked teeth can come from a range and variety of issues, though some of the most common reasons are:
Small Mouth: Often, many people are simply born with small mouths. When our mouths are too small, we can end up with crowded teeth, which will rotate and move so that they can fully grow in. This issue is usually fixed by having some teeth pulled and having the remaining teeth moved into a straight alignment with braces or other dental fixes.
Gum disease: Gum disease will affect your mouth in many negative ways, one of which is that it will affect your tooth growth. Gum disease will cause teeth to fall out, to die slowly, and can cause teeth to move about. To avoid this issue, brush and floss regularly so that your teeth stay in good form and good health.
Early loss of baby teeth: Interestingly, having your baby teeth fall out early can cause crooked teeth. When our baby teeth leave too early, our adult teeth will grow into mouths too small and crowded, which will cause our teeth to twist and move as they grow in.
Luckily, all of these issues can be fixed by a good dentist or orthodontist, so talk with your dentist to see what can be done to make your smile nice and straight.
California Dentist Ready to Assist You
Having crooked teeth is not desirable by many, not only for cosmetic reasons but also for health reasons. Straight teeth allow for better mouth health and better overall health, so when you decide that you want to have straight teeth, it’s important to go to the right people. At the Del Mar, California office of Curtis L. How to Protect Your Teeth from Fruit
One of the Main Food Groups
A healthy diet consists of eating from what nutritionists call the “food groups,” namely: proteins, grains, vegetables, and fruits. All of these foods are good and necessary for us to live a healthy life, and without even one of these groups, we can end up suffering from a lack of vitamins and minerals that we need for our bodies. Still, even with this fact, some foods can have negative outcomes on our bodies, and so it’s important for us to protect ourselves as much as possible from these adverse effects.
F6ruit is one of the foods we need in our daily lives, but it can end up causing great damage to our teeth. The acids in the fruit we eat are namely what can harm our teeth, especially if we eat a lot of fruit and fruit products, so knowing the steps to take to minimize this damage is incredibly important, as this knowledge is necessary to ensure that our teeth are around for many years to come.
Our teeth and oral health are very important, so it’s not only important we practice the daily oral health steps needed to ensure our teeth are clean and healthy, but to also visit our dentist to ensure that our teeth are well cared for by a professional.
How to Protect Our Teeth from Acidic Fruit
Many of the fruits we eat contain acids that, when left untreated, will cause our teeth to suffer decay and can contribute to cavities and other tooth issues. To help fight these effects, fruit lovers need to ensure that they follow a few simple steps in order to keep their teeth happy:
Swish with water: After eating a piece of fruit, our teeth and mouth will be covered in the acids that the fruit naturally contains. To help ensure that these acids are not slowly damaging our teeth, swish a mouthful or two of water right after you finish eating. This water will help to remove most of these acids, which will make your teeth healthier and experience less loss and damage over time.
Floss: Some fruits, like pineapple, can find their way between our teeth and decide that they don’t want to easily come out. This fruit will begin to affect our teeth by leaking the acids it contains between our teeth, promoting cavity growth. By flossing soon after eating fruit, you can help eliminate this damage by removing the fruit from between your teeth, helping them to be healthy and strong.
Use toothpaste that strengthens enamel: The first thing acids affect on our teeth is our enamel, which is the outer layer of our teeth. We need to ensure that these parts of our teeth are strong and healthy at all times to help fight against decay, so it’s wise to use an enamel strengthening toothpaste to ensure that our teeth can withstand the acids of fruits for years to come.

What is the Purpose of Tooth Shaving?
What is Tooth Shaving?
When it comes to the dental practices that we can have performed on our teeth, some seemingly make more sense than others. Having cavities filled, dead teeth removed, teeth whitened, and teeth straightened are all dental practices that have important reasonings behind them. These are used to better our dental and oral health, they are used to keep our smile looking professional and healthy, and they are used to better our overall health. These are all typical practices that we are all aware of. However, there are some practices that dentists use that are sometimes confusing to us, and it can leave us with more questions than what we know to do with.
About Professional Teeth Shaving in Del Mar, CA
Tooth shaving can be one of those practices. Tooth shaving is just how it sounds: your dentist will take a tool and shave down part of a tooth or will shave down parts of many teeth. For many, this technique seems to be more confusing than not, as having our teeth shaved just doesn’t seem to make any logical sense. This seems quite odd, yes, but this practice is actually quite common for many reasons, all of which look to improve the dental health and life of the person in need of the service.
Why do Some People Have Their Teeth Shaved?
Tooth shaving is performed by dentists for many reasons, all of which serve an important roll in the life of the person having the service provided. Some of the reasons used for this procedure include:
Reshaping teeth: Sometimes, our teeth need to be reshaped. We can end up with a tooth that has been chipped or damaged that needs to be taken care of to help make sure it and our mouth is healthy. When our teeth are broken, not only does it lead to possible infection, jagged edges of our teeth can cut open the inside of our cheeks, which can lead to further discomfort and infection.
Giving the mouth more room: Sometimes, our mouths are too small for our teeth. When this is the case, our dentist may decide to shave the parts between our teeth to allow for more room in our mouths. By creating more room in our mouth, we can more easily clean our mouths and keep them free of bacteria and food particles.
Cosmetic reasons: There are lots of reasons people may want their teeth to be shaved. Sometimes, they wish to have a different looking smile. Other times, they need to have some teeth look different (i.e., a lateral incisor is pulled and a “canine” is moved in its place; the “canine” may need to be shaved to look like a normal lateral incisor). Teeth may also sometimes not look uniform, so having a tooth shaved can help with this issue. No matter the reason, this is a fairly simple way to make small adjustments to your teeth, which can be a big help later on.

What’s Worse: A Candy Bar or a Soda?
Types of Sugar in Our Foods
Del Mar, CA Dentist Dr. Chan Shares Strategies for Good Dental Health
While large quantities of sugar aren’t good for us, some sugar is both necessary and enjoyable to eat. Fruits, vegetables, and milk all contain natural sugars, which are good for us, while candy, soda, and some juices contain processed sugar, which we need to be sure to limit to stay healthy. Unfortunately, processed sugar is very addictive, so we can find it difficult to limit our intake of this type of sugar, but with good control, we can still be healthy while enjoying a sugary treat every now and again.
When we do indulge in these treats, it’s important that we take the health of our teeth into consideration before we eat too much. Certain sugary treats are worse for our teeth than others, but how much worse are they? In particular, candy bars and soda are two sweets often consumed by many Americans daily, so which of the two would be better to cut back on or entirely give up to lessen the damage if these treats are enjoyed regularly? While there is no clear answer since it’s all very dependent, there are pros and cons to each one, and so it’s important to weigh these factors to make the best decision for you and your life.
Even after years of consuming sugary foods, you can still work hard to help your teeth be healthy and improve their overall health with the help of a good dentist and some dedication.
Is Soda or Candy Bars Worse for Teeth?
Many people enjoy the sugary taste and rush that candy bars and soda give them, but between the two, which is worse for you? Well, admittedly, that question will change based on each individual. We all eat our sweets differently, and these differences can change the way they affect our teeth, so for this question, we will simply look at these treats as they are.
Candy bars are full of sugar. From the chocolate to the nougat to the caramel, sugar is infused in all parts of that candy. Candy bars also come in many varieties, which, of course, will affect your teeth differently depending on what is included in the bar. Things like caramel and nougat will often stick to our teeth for long periods of time, which can cause cavities over time of these aren’t cleaned off our teeth quickly. For the most part, the sticky ingredients and the sugar levels in candy bars are what will cause you issues with your teeth, so if you want to eat these candies regularly, be sure to brush your teeth soon after consuming them.
Sodas are also a treat very high in sugar. These drinks are sometimes consumed multiple times a day with multiple meals and also come in many varieties. With sodas, the sugary liquid will reach all parts of your mouth, meaning that your chances of cavities in all parts of your mouth will increase. Soda also has a variety of acids incorporated into their recipes as well, which work to break teeth down over time. When sodas are drunk slowly or in large quantities, this exposure to the acids and sugars is quite detrimental for our teeth and will cause decay over time.
Again, each of these sugary treats aren’t great for our teeth, and limiting our intake of them is important for our overall tooth health. Overall, soda has a more negative impact on our teeth, but that doesn’t make it worse than candy bars if someone drinks soda occasionally and eats candy bars constantly. As with most things, rationing your treats is the best way to both enjoy them but also have better tooth health. Talk with your dentist as well to see what else you can do to satisfy your sweet tooth and keep your teeth healthy.

How do Teeth Fall Out?
Losing Teeth as a Child vs. an Adult
As a child, losing a tooth is one of the most exciting things that can occur. Your parents tell you that you’re growing up, you get a visit from the Tooth Fairy, your pictures are all cooed over by adults, and you get to have the fun experience of getting your adult teeth to come in. Truly, losing your teeth as a child is a sign of maturity, and it marks a new exciting chapter in your life.
As an adult, however, losing your teeth is less exciting. When we lose a tooth as an adult, we can feel self-conscious and embarrassed, especially if the missing tooth is not easy to hide. When we have missing teeth, we can end up becoming more antisocial, can allow our health to decline, and can end up visiting the dentist less due to frustration. It’s important to remember that, today, there are many fixes for a lost tooth available and that your dentist is the person to talk to about loose or lost teeth to help you regain your confidence and happiness.
Why do Our Teeth Fall Out?
As children, teeth fall out due to our biology. We need room for our adult teeth to go, so our baby teeth fall out. As adults, our teeth will fall out, typically, for one of two reasons: physical damage or disease. As we age, our ability to be involved in more physical accidents can increase, which can increase our risk of losing a tooth. Playing a sport, getting into a fight, being involved in a car accident, or biting down on something you shouldn’t can all cause a tooth to fall out. Being careful in your activities and wearing protective gear when necessary can help keep your teeth safe, but this will not guarantee your teeth will be safe.
The second reason adult teeth will fall out is due to disease. Most commonly, periodontitis is the reason that teeth will fall out in adults. This disease is an inflammation and infection of the structures that support the teeth, allowing the teeth to become loose. This disease is a result of untreated gingivitis, which will infect the mouth further than the gums when it is not taken care of. To treat this issue before teeth fall out, you must see a dentist to be diagnosed, and then the dentist will either do some deep cleaning, will help to build new supports for your teeth, or will remove infected teeth to help your mouth as a whole.
Lost teeth can occur in anyone’s life, but it’s important to remember that many people have missing teeth and that a visit to your dentist can help you know your options in having your missing tooth fixed so that you can lead a normal and healthy life.

Popular Foods that Stain Your Teeth
How Are Teeth Stained?
Often, it’s nice to treat ourselves to our favorite foods and beverages. Smoothies, wines, pizza, curries, and candies are all things that we can enjoy to have every now and again, or for some people, every week. These treats are beloved for many reasons, though our teeth may not love them as much as we do. For a part of our body, we want to keep healthy and bright, these treats can cause serious issues for our teeth, and often, we don’t think much about it.
Having stained teeth is a common problem everyone faces. Teeth are commonly stained by foods and drinks that discolor our enamel, which makes them look dull instead of nice and white. Stained teeth can be remedied with whitening products or cosmetic appointments with your dentist, but for those of us who want a cheaper option to keep our teeth whiter longer, it’s simply easier to either avoid the foods that can seriously stain our teeth, or at least limit them so that they do not affect us as much. By knowing what foods stain your teeth, you can help your teeth, in the long run, stay brighter longer without the constant cost of whitening solutions.
Popular Foods that Will Stain Your Teeth
While all food has the ability to negatively affect your teeth, some foods can have a quicker effect than others. Some foods that are quite popular that can stain your teeth quickly include:
Wine and Coffee: Wine and coffee have always been popular, but with recent studies showing that these drinks can help you live longer, more and more people are seeing the need to drink them. These drinks are beloved for many reasons, but they can be terrible for your teeth. The acidic nature of these drinks and the colors associated with these drinks cause your teeth to look dull, especially if you drink them a lot. If you drink these beverages, be sure to brush your teeth soon after to help diminish these effects.
Berries: As summer advances, so does our want of fresh and delicious fruits. Berries like raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries are all summer favorites, though your teeth may disagree. These berries are delicious, but they stain your teeth quickly and easily, which makes them a nuisance for your white smile. If you consume these berries, be sure to swish your mouth with water immediately afterward and to brush your teeth as soon as you can to help keep your teeth white and happy.
Tomato Sauce: Although we may not think about it, tomato sauce is in a lot of things. Pasta sauce, pizza, soups, and stews are just some of the places this product can be found, and it is unfortunately very staining.
